Backpacking in South Africa

backpacking in south africa hostels sa backpackers za hostelHostels & Backpackers, or Backpacking generally in South Africa is relatively new!!! Throughout apartheid, South Africa was pretty much ignored by youth travellers and the backpacking fiternity, partly due to there social and ethical responsibilities and opinions.

In 1994 after Nelson Mandela’s release and the abolition of apartheid with SA’s first multi racial elections, the backpackers started to filter in through Zimbabwe whom had been fully submersed in to the whole industry for some years.

Slowly as South Africans travelled themselves and more and more of the world youth travel market made their way to the shores of South Africa, the need for budget accommodation was starting to be realised by the free thinking locals and Backpackers hostel as we know them were born !!!

Backpacking around SA was not as easy as it is today with the invention of the BAZ BUS a service aimed just at the specific industry then cheep flights and car hire came along to take the place of hitch hiking and local taxi rides !

No pillows, no sheets, no problem!!!!

backpacking history south africa backpackers Jeffreys bay hostelsBack in the day just a bunk bed with a mangy old mattress was a bonus at a hostel!

The hostels were opening on a shoe string with minimal cash but maximum energy!

By 1998 advertising sheets and duvets was the new craze and a few double rooms were sneaking out of the woodwork even en sweet was a dream at hostels and Backpackpackers.

For many of us the last 10 years has flown buy in a frenzy of building, growing and adapting our hostels to accommodate the ever changing BACKPACKER from the dreadlocked traveller with holes in his shoes, a tent and 25 rand a day to live on to the laptop toting gold card swiping bungy jumping flash packer (we love them all)

In summery South Africa’s backpacking hostels have come a very long way in a short time and due to hard work, dedicated staff, forward thinking owners and fantastic customers making our hostels amongst the best in the world
